Zaituni Wambui – Urban Taarab Visionary
Born and raised in Nairobi, Zaituni Wambui is a singer, songwriter, and performer blending Swahili coastal tradition with modern soul. A Sauti Academy alum, she grew up surrounded by early Taarab cassettes passed down through her family—raw rhythms and melodies that shaped her artistic identity.
In 2018, she embraced music as a career, developing her signature sound, Urban Taarab—a contemporary fusion enriched with Arabic scales, delicate vocal runs, and emotional depth. Inspired by icons like Siti binti Saad and Bi Kidude, Zaituni brings timeless Swahili influences into fresh, modern soundscapes.
A 2022 Tusker NexT Stars finalist, she has also featured on Waithaka’s acclaimed projects Odes by Queens and Soul’d Duets, earning praise for her warm, evocative voice. Her debut EP arrives later this year, following the rising success of her sensual single “Tamu”, produced by Anariko.
